Have you ever thought about what a website is really for?

When you take a close look at it, the purpose of a website comes down to information and interaction. The world wide web is all about information.

Information is the main reason someone visits a website of any kind. For this reason, every sentence, picture or message, everything that makes up your site should be there for one reason - to get information to your visitors. Even people that won’t buy over the Internet are looking for information, information about your products, your prices, your services. If they find that information on your site and like it, they might become a client, if they don’t find what they’re looking for they definitely won’t become a client.

Interaction is what separates a website from a print ad or a flyer. Interaction is the lifeblood of the internet. Without interaction your website is missing the most important aspect of a website. If you don’t give your visitors ways to interact with your company they won’t stay for long and they might not be back in a while.
Here are some tips how you can make sure visitors can interact with you:

  1. Include contact information on every page a link to the page with your contact information
  2. Have a downloadable catalogue, product information, or even a coupon, or special offer
  3. Ask visitors for feedback, comments about the site, or let them ask you a question.
  4. Make it easy for visitors to find information on your site.
  5. Change your content often, or add new information on a regular basis.

Is your website search engine friendly?

Have you ever wondered if your website has what it takes to get top results in search engines? A good way to find out, is by typing “site:www.yourdomain” in the search field of your preferred search engine.
If you only get a few results,  or worse, no results, your website might be set up in a way that makes it difficult or even impossible for search engine spiders to find the pages of your site. It’s quite surprising how many websites are inadvertently or accidently configured to be difficult for search engines to access.
There can be several reasons for this, but usually it comes down to the fact that the spider can’t find links to your pages.

If you get results, but they aren’t very informative or look like the examples below, then you also have some work to do.

bad search results examples

You can control how your search results look and what information gets displayed, by putting the right information into the right place on your pages.

If you take care of these two things, make sure the spiders can find your pages and that you results have the information you want them to have and get people to click on your link, you’re already a step  ahead of a lot of website owners.

Do you know if your website gets traffic

Do you know how much traffic your website gets? Or what pages your visitors looked at and how long, or if they found you through a search engine or came to your site through a link from another website. Do you know how many hits your site gets on a daily or monthly basis. Wouldn't it be interesting to know what key phrases where used to find your website, or which search engine was used?

All these things and a lot more information about traffic and statisics of your website are collected by most hosting providers for free. If you don't know how to access the statistics and reports, just contact your web hosting provider and ask them for access to your stat reports.

If your hosting provider doesn't keep track on website traffic, you have two options. First, you can switch to a hosting company that provides statistic reports, or second, you can sign up for Google Analytics. All you have to do is create a free Google account and copy a piece of code in your website pages, and you get statistics on how many visitors you have, where your they come form and a lot more.

Contact us if you would like to know more about this topic, or if you need help to switch hosting providers or set up a Google Analytics account.
